  • Technology: biomechanics, finite elements, simulation, subroutines

INTRODUCTION

ICEMM in collaboration with the University of Seville Foundation and the Faculty of Dentistry of Seville, has carried out the study of the mechanical behaviour of the interaction between bone and dental implant in patients with bruxism, where the dental prosthesis is subjected to cyclical pathological loads.

ACTIVITIES

For the development of the project, a detailed finite element model was defined, divided into three different zones according to their stiffness:

  • Dental implant
  • Cancellous bone
  • Cortical bone.

This finite element model was validated by photoelastic testing. The figure below shows the test isochromatics and the digital treatment of the image for better post-processing:

Estudio del comportamiento mecánico de la interacción entre hueso y el implante dental

A comparison was made between two commercial implants and a pattern of bone loss was established, using the stress state and the lost contact surface of the cortical bone as evaluation criteria.

Using Abaqus software, numerical simulation techniques based on the finite element method have been applied for stress evaluation, together with a constitutive model of bone remodelling that modifies the physical properties of the bone, such that biological removal of bone material occurs in the areas surrounding the implant when a given stress threshold is exceeded.
